How to Select the Right Financial Plan – Jerry Fetta

I can remember in 2013 as a new financial advisor, I was meeting with a client one day. These particular clients were good friends of mine and I had known them since I was a kid. I felt fully competent about  my knowledge and ability to advise them. I remember sitting down to the meeting and asking this young, entrepreneurial couple when they would like to retire. They told me ten years. This threw me off because they were only 25 years old. I was taught that retirement could MAYBE happen at age 55 at the earliest. However, I obliged and asked them a follow up question. “How much per month would you like to live off in retirement?” They told be $20,000 per month. (If you have goals like this click here to learn how to get there faster) At this point I remember being halted. It was like a calculator dealing with an equation that it was not designed to compute for. I recall calling my manager and asking him for advice on how to tell these people their goals were unrealistic and needed to be changed. This story, was when I first began my journey to realizing that a financial advisor cannot help individuals build wealth. I will cover a few specific reasons why.

1. Many Financial Advisors are taught to operate on scarcity mentality. When I was first trained I was taught that most people would retire at age 65 on 70% of their working income. If the individual was really well off, I was taught that they’d retire on 80% of their working income, and then those that were bad off would retire on 60% of their working income. In the story above, when my friends said they wanted 400-500% of their working income, I went into scarcity mode. I was taught that my job was to talk them down into a “realistic” number. This is dangerous. Never let someone talk you out of your goals just because it is not realistic for them.

2. Financial Advisors are taught to help you build a life to can run away from. Retire literally means “retreat”. Why on earth would you want to spend 40 years creating something that you dislike so strongly that you must run away from it? The entire concept of retirement lacks responsibility, value, and is one of the main causes behind individuals getting sick, adopting mental diseases, and dying young. We were created to work and to created things. The minute we stop having a purpose our lives begin to shut down. My friends wanted to live a life by design NOW and not defer it for 40 years. Never put off until tomorrow what could be done today. Especially when it is your life purpose.

3. Financial Advisors don’t understand investing vs. speculating. My biggest flaw in creating a plan for these friends of mine was not realizing how wealth is built. First off, statically speaking 63% of the small business equity in America is owned of The Top 1%. These people were going to build wealth with their business, not with my mutual funds. After business, their next focus would be income real estate. When I showed them living on $20,000/mo with mutual funds I showed them that they needed to save tens-of-thousands of dollars per month in today’s income to be even a fraction of the way to their goal. My assumption was that their goals were broken, but in reality it was my methods that were broken.

Would you take diet advice from an obese person? Would you take exercise advice from someone who is injured all the time? Would you take health advice from a sick person? Certainly not! Then why is it that we are taught to take financial advice from those who simply know how to regurgitate information they learned on an exam developed by Wall Street and the Federal Government?

The way to build wealth is to set life goals, do the math to see how much income is required, and set frequent targets. You’ll also want a coach, education, and community. In reality, the product is meaningless until these things are in place first.
