How to OverCome Adversity – Jerry Fetta | AG Capital

We’ve all had adversity before, right? Of course, adversity is hard times and struggles that we all face, isn’t it? Almost! The dictionary defines adversity as “unfavorable fortune or fate.” Although, the etymology of adversity is ” hostile or to turn against”. I like the etymology better than the definition. Why? Because the definition makes it sound like it’s not our fault. The words “fate” and “fortune” make adversity sound like it is simply bad luck. Well today I’m going to tell you how I handle adversity.

  1. Own it! Take personal responsibility for your adversities even if they aren’t yours. When adversity appears I almost always initially feel like a victim. I get antagonistic or even angry regarding the adversity. I have to remind myself that I am the effect of my own causes. Somehow, somewhere, I did something to cause the adversity and therefore it is my responsibility to own it and fix it. Here’s the thing, if I don’t own m problems I can’t own my solutions. Take hold of your adversities as yours.
  2. Confront it! Look under the bed and confront the boogie man! Adversity isn’t that scary. For every action there is an equal or opposite reaction, right? That’s a law of motion. So, adversity is simply another cycle of cause and effect. Every action produces a result and so adversity is simply just a result. The fact that it’s a result we don’t like is the only real issue. Think about this though, the most pleasurable experiences are when we overcome adversity and danger for the win. It’s always more fun and exhilarating to overcome the obstacle after a good fight and win the battle. I believe that is the high level of pleasure there is. Winning without an obstacle is virtually meaningless. Identify adversity as just another result of cause and effect and embrace the obstacle as part of your victory.
  3. Change your effort! It’s a fact that struggling is effort just like succeeding is effort. It’s all effort at the end of the day. In fact, it actually takes more effort to struggle than it does to win. Do you get it? If you’re experiencing adversity, you’re already expending more than the quotient of effort that it takes to succeed. Your effort simply needs to be redirected. This comes down to changing what we agree with. We experience adversity because somewhere along the line we agreed with something that created an adverse result. We must stop agreeing with that thing and agree with something that will allow us to overcome adversity. Even if we don’t believe that thing can happen, we must find a way to believe in it. Let’s face it, we must alter reality to lose so we may as well alter it back to win.
  4. Take massive action! I used to think massive action meant doing really big things like swinging for the home run every time. It doesn’t mean that at all. It does mean that we take time out of the equation. Take lots of swings with no time in between. They don’t have to be homeruns. In fact, they should be singles and bunts. You want low hanging fruit. You’ll use momentum to get to the home runs soon enough but right now you need movement!
