Is Your Network REALLY Your Net Worth? – Jerry Fetta
Over and over I’ve heard the phrase “your network is your net worth”. Around the age of 18 when I began in business, I would hear people say it all the time. Initially, I thought it was the phrase of low producers who go to speed date style networking groups and are trying to downplay money because they aren’t earning any. This could be true in some cases, but I began to realize what this phrase really means. The fact is, network is the advantage when the playing field of money is level.
If we were all billionaires…. Let’s say we really were all billionaires. You and I decide to compete for an investment deal. I want it. You want it. We both have the entire purchase price in cash and a signed letter of intent. There are only two things that matter at this point and money is not either of them.
1. The better salesperson wins. The person that can add the most value AND communicate that value persuasively has a distinct advantage. Intention must be there and communication must be there. If you cannot sell, you will hit a plateau on your wealth building potential. At most, you will have only a few million dollars in assets if you cannot sell. If you’re happy with that, great! If you want more than that, you must become an expert at how to sell.
2. The bigger network wins. Wealth will be built in direct proportion to the network size of the individual. The bigger the list of people who know who you are and what you do, the wealthier you will be. The smaller the list, the smaller the net worth. In fact, quality has nothing to do with it. You don’t even need to be best friends with everyone in your network. You must simply have a relationship where they recognize who you are and what you do. Want proof? Your family is a small, quality list of people. But unless you are a Trump or a Kardashian, this small, quality list of your family will never make you wealthy. If you have a network, you are connected to people and opportunity always comes from people.
We have been taught that wealth is from assets. Well where do assets come from? People! And how did those people get the assets? By selling! It is an undisputable fact that without sales skills and a network, you will never build true wealth.
