How To Overcome Limiting Beliefs About Money

By: Jerry Fetta

Growing up, my family always struggled with money. There was never a time we were doing well financially and we were always in poverty. I can remember being kicked out of our house, having our car repossessed, having my parents get divorced, living in trailers and tents, and sleeping in abandoned houses all because of money. I lived this way for over 19 years of my life. If you’ve experienced this too, you know that it creates a mindset of scarcity that is hard to reverse. Imagine being a condition to act, think, and live a certain way for almost 2 decades and then trying to change it in a day. It seems impossible. The fact is, the majority of us deal with this. The money shortage mindset is one of the top things that can and will prevent you from being wealthy.

I also remember the first time I heard the phrase “limiting belief”. It had never occurred to me that I could have beliefs that actually limit me. Why hadn’t it occurred? Because I thought I was right. If I was right, then how could any of my beliefs be limiting? But when I heard the phrase, I stopped in my tracks. I was in a class to learn how to grow my business and that phrase stuck with me. There are beliefs in all of our lives about money that keep you poor. The crazy part is, these beliefs of yours often came from people you love. There is an emotional boundary we do not want to cross that toes the line of “I love my mom, but she taught me some dumb things”. So in order to protect our emotions and the feelings of others, we make the beliefs we learn sacred and refuse to examine them.

The result? Most of us have beliefs about money that aren’t true, that we are emotionally attached to, that also keep us poor. I want to tell you about some of the ones I had to overcome and how I did it.

The first one I had was that I’d never make a sale. When I first started in business I was 18 years old and I was getting into sales. I had made sales at previous jobs of mine, but for some reason this new opportunity was different. You see, I was working in financial services and I was brand new. I had just gotten licensed and the clout of what I was going to be doing hadn’t sunk in yet. All I could think about was that I would be talking to people about money and there’s no way they’d want to listen to me or work with me. I remember looking at my powerbase list over and over and feeling terrified. I didn’t think I had the credibility nor anything of value to offer those people. I didn’t just believe that it was a fact. It took someone telling me they wish I would have sat down with them to help them before I realized how wrong I was. That’s right, this limiting belief was shattered when someone actually told me they regretted the fact I never gave them the opportunity to work with me. I then realized that regardless of what I think, people need help.

After that, I remember thinking I could never go full time in my business. It seemed unattainable. I was working an evening pizza delivery shift and working my business during the day. I would make $2000/mo at my job and another $500-$1000/mo part-time working my business. I thought I was making good money, but it never occurred to me that I could quit the pizza job and just work my business full time. Not only did it not occur to me, but it didn’t even seem real. When it was suggested to me I would contract and shrink and at times even laugh at the idea. Until I looked around and saw everyone else doing it. I saw people who smoke weed winning in business, I saw unintelligent people doing well in business…I saw young people and old people all doing well in business. And none of them wanted it as I did. I decided to quit my job one day. I called in, quiet and then told my wife later that day. She was fine and I then started finding ways to get meetings and make money. That was that. I shattered that limiting belief by looking around me at others and just making a move.

The final one I want to talk about was the limiting belief that I’d never make more than $50,000 in a year. This was the most I’d ever heard my parents talk about. At one point in my childhood, I heard something about my dad making $50,000 and I thought it was a lot of money! At this point, I was full time in my business and trying to expand it. I had made about $30,000, which was incredible to me. But it did not seem possible that I’d make $50,000. For some reason, I thought I was capped out or that my business would fail before I could get there. And then it just happened. I didn’t walk on coals or take ice showers, I just kept working. Because I had to. And my work resulted in my income exceeding $50,000. I looked at my statements and saw I’d made $55,000. I didn’t feel any different and in reality, I didn’t even notice until I counted it up. Then I kept going to $100,000.

My point with this is that if you have limiting beliefs, it’s normal. We all do. If you’re focused on them, you aren’t busy enough. I’ve tried the mindset stuff and meditation, and all of that. It didn’t help me one bit and in fact, all it did was distract me and make me more focused on my flaws and fears. What has always worked for me and will continue to work is massive action. I have always just put in the work because that’s that only thing there really was to do and the work paid off after a while. Money is the same way. If you are having limiting beliefs about money and not trying to sell, you are wasting your time. If you are not actively working at maximum capacity to become wealthy, your limiting belief about money will not go away.
