The Truth About Health Insurance – Jerry Fetta

Health insurance is astronomically expensive. We can all agree on that, right? I want to share with you why. There are 3 major reasons:

  1. Hospitals inflate their prices in their rate book. It’s true. Hospitals are no different than car dealerships. They never actually give a discount. Insurance companies ask medical facilities for a volume discount for sending so much business. Hospitals and medical facilities want to oblige and keep the business and they also do not want their profit margins to drop. So, they jack the price up high and then give a discount on the price increase so that insurance liaisons can go back to their bosses and say, “I got a discount!” In actuality, they are paying the same or more as they would in the first place, but the “discount” technically exists.
  1. Insurance companies absorb the over-inflated costs by overcharging you in premiums. We just addressed the fact that hospitals jack their prices up to give insurance companies a “discount” without actually losing any money. The insurance companies transfer this expense to you and me. That’s right! Because insurance companies are also in business for a profit they must make sure they aren’t losing money. So, the inflated costs are absorbed by the American consumer.
  1. We expect it! This is the #1 reason we overpay for insurance. Yes, hospitals overcharge. Yes, insurance companies transfer the inflated expenses to our premiums. But why? Because they know they can and they know we’ll pay it. Ultimately, we are not victims. We are allowing this to happen to ourselves.

So how do we fix this? Easy! We fight for lower premiums! Does this mean we go and picket and stand outside hospitals and insurance company headquarters? Do we riot? No! We creatively find ways to lower our premium. We vote for a different option with our dollars.
